In 1912, Holland & Holland judged a bullet diameter of .375" to be a light medium bore when they designed this cartridge. But because of the comparatively light recoil and the cutting-edge bullet design, it quickly rose to the top of the list of all-purpose cartridges used for hunting in Africa and has remained there ever since. The decision to include a belt right behind the rim was made by the designers because of the cartridge's short shoulder. As a result, the magnificent name "Holland & Holland's .375 Belted Rimless Magnum Express" was originally given to the cartridge.
The .375 was intended to be used in a magnum-length action, but since these were hard to come by before World War II, many English gunmakers removed metal in order to adequately increase the magazine of standard-length Mauser actions. The case was quickly used as the foundation for several wildcats and commercial "short magnum" cartridges because both alternatives were expensive.
