Description

Speer Grand Slam  30cal 180grain 2063

With a tapered, precision-drawn jacket and a long nose, the Grand Slam® bullet is engineered to blow through the thick hides, heavy bones and tough bodies of the world’s biggest game—without sacrificing accuracy. On impact, internal jacket flutes allow consistent expansion, yet the bullet retains most of its weight for deep penetration every time.

  • A tapered, precision-drawn jacket
  • Internal jacket flutes
  • Long nose profile for flatter trajectories
  • Exceptional accuracy

Best Suited For

  • The Grand Slam is a .308 caliber bullet designed with precision engineering for big game hunting. Its tapered, precision-drawn jacket ensures reliable expansion, while the long nose profile enhances accuracy and knockdown power.

    Ideal game animals:

  • Deer & Red Deer — reliable expansion with deep penetration
  • Elk & Wapiti — hunters using 180gr Grand Slams in a .30-06 on elk have reported wonderful results and very high weight retention with no fragmentation.
  • Moose & large bodied game — hunters using Grand Slams on elk, moose, mountain caribou, and similar large game found the bullet delivered exceptional penetration, including after shooting animals lengthwise through big bones such as vertebrae and humerus bones.
  • Bears — for spot-and-stalk black bear or any grizzly/brown bear hunt, the Grand Slam is a strong choice since it drives deep and retains weight even in large-bodied animals.

New Zealand context: Well-suited for NZ's red deer, tahr, chamois, wapiti, and feral pigs at a range of distances and terrain conditions.

When To Use It

The Grand Slam's aerodynamic design is flatter shooting than many rivals and retains downrange energy, which translates to cleaner kills. It also performs well when shooting faster magnums because there's less chance of bullet break-up at closer ranges. Internal skives (notches) initiate expansion at lower velocities — a key factor when shooting at great distances.

Use the Grand Slam 180gr when:

  • Hunting medium to large game at ranges from close up to the edge of your rifle's capability
  • You need consistent expansion across a wide velocity range (close bush shots to long cross-valley shots)
  • Hunting in terrain like NZ's South Island where shots can vary significantly in distance
  • You want bonded-style performance at a more affordable price point than premium bonded bullets

FAQs

Is this loaded ammunition? No. This is a reloading component, not loaded ammunition.

What weight retention can I expect? The Hot-Cor process, mechanical lock at the heel, and thick shank typically result in 80 to 85% weight retention.

Does it expand at long range / lower velocities? Yes. Multiple internal flutes at the jacket tip ensure uniform expansion whether shooting slower cartridges like the 300 Savage or fast magnums like the 300 Weatherby.

Delivery & Compliance'

Good news for NZ reloaders: A Police permit is not required to import ammunition components such as projectiles (bullets), empty cartridges, primers, BBs, or airgun pellets. The Grand Slam #2063 is a bare projectile/reloading component, not loaded ammunition — so it falls into this exempt category.

Key NZ compliance points:

  • To import non-prohibited loaded ammunition, you must have a NZ firearms licence and a permit to import. It is an offence to import loaded ammunition without a permit. However, bare projectiles like the Grand Slam #2063 are not subject to this requirement.
  • You must apply for any required permit before your items arrive in New Zealand, otherwise items may be seized or detained by NZ Customs or NZ Police. Applications may take around 5–6 weeks to process. (Applicable if ordering loaded ammo — not bare projectiles.)
  • These bullets contain lead and are not lead-free, which is worth noting for hunting near waterways under Fish & Game regulations.
  • Standard NZ Customs biosecurity rules apply to all imports — packaging must be clean and free of contaminants.
