Description

Sierra .22cal .224 40gr Soft point #1200

In the tough sport of varmint hunting, Sierra Varminter Bullets deliver the performance and consistency required. These thin-jacketed, soft core bullets were developed for muzzle speeds between 2600 and 2900 fps in cartridges including the 22 Hornet, 22 K-Hornet, and 218 Bee. In barrels with a 1 in 16" twist, these short bullets easily stabilize. These varmint bullets also work effectively in medium capacity cartridges like the 222 Remington and 223 Remington at speeds up to 3500 feet per second.

Best Suited For

  • Small game and varmint hunting (rabbits, possums, foxes, etc.)
  • Lower-velocity cartridges such as .22 Hornet, .221 Fireball, and similar
  • Reloaders seeking reliable expansion at modest velocities
  • Lightweight, high-velocity loads for minimal recoil and flat trajectories

When To Use It

  • When loading ammunition for small to medium varmints where expansion is desired
  • In cartridges that benefit from lighter 40gr projectiles for higher velocity
  • When using older or lower-pressure cartridges (e.g., Hornet-class rounds)
  • Ideal for short-to-medium range shooting where terminal performance matters more than long-range ballistic coefficient

FAQs

Q: What makes a soft point bullet different?
A: Soft point bullets have an exposed lead tip, allowing controlled expansion on impact—ideal for hunting rather than target shooting.

Q: Is this suitable for .223 Remington?
A: Yes, it can be used in .223 Remington, but it is particularly well-suited to lighter or lower-velocity loads. Always follow published load data.

Q: How does 40gr compare to heavier bullets (55gr+)?
A: 40gr bullets generally offer higher velocity and flatter trajectory at short range, but are more affected by wind and lose energy faster.

Q: Can beginners use this for reloading?
A: Yes, provided they follow safe, published load data and proper reloading procedures.
