Description

Redding Expander Mandrel 0.2835

The Redding Expander Mandrel 0.2835 is a precision reloading tool designed to uniform the inside diameter of cartridge case necks for 7mm (.284 caliber) cartridges. It’s used with a compatible expanding die body and helps achieve consistent neck tension, which is critical for accuracy and repeatable performance.

These mandrels are machined from hardened tool steel and ground to very tight tolerances, allowing smooth, concentric expansion of the case neck.

Best Suited For

  • Precision rifle reloaders (especially 7mm cartridges like 7mm-08, .280 Rem, etc.)
  • Benchrest and long-range shooters
  • Handloaders seeking consistent neck tension
  • Brass preparation workflows involving:
    • Neck turning
    • Annealing
    • Match-grade ammunition

When To Use It

Use the 0.2835 mandrel when:

  • You want ~0.001–0.002" neck tension (depending on bullet diameter and brass thickness)
  • After full-length sizing or bushing sizing to:
    • Round out necks
    • Standardize internal diameter
  • Before seating bullets for improved consistency
  • When converting or necking up/down brass

👉 Mandrels are typically used after sizing and before bullet seating as part of brass prep.

FAQs

Why use a mandrel instead of the expander ball?

Mandrels:

  • Reduce runout (better concentricity)
  • Provide more consistent neck tension
  • Are gentler on brass compared to expander balls

What does a 0.2835 mandrel actually do?

It sets the inside neck diameter of the brass, which directly controls how tightly the bullet is held (neck tension).

Delivery & Compliance

  • They are considered reloading accessories/tools
