Description

Forster Hand Outside Neck Turner Pilot .224" #HOT2224

The Forster Hand Held Outside Neck Turner tool allows the reloader to make absolutely certain that their bullet is being released consistently from the case neck. At the point of ignition, the case neck must expand to allow bullet release. If the case neck is thicker on one side than the other, the thinner side will release the bullet sooner and causes a slight bullet-to-bore misalignment that can seriously impair accuracy. These steel pilots, also called mandrels, are precision ground .002" to .0025" smaller than bullet diameter for optimum performance.

Best Suited For

  • Reloaders working with .22 caliber cartridges (e.g., .223 Remington, .222 Rem, .22-250).
  • Precision shooters aiming for consistent neck wall thickness and improved accuracy.
  • Users of the Forster Hand-Held Outside Neck Turner system.
  • Benchrest and varmint shooters where tight tolerances and concentricity matter most.

👉 The pilot acts as a precision mandrel, guiding the cutter so brass is removed evenly around the case neck.

When To Use It

  • After case resizing and expanding but before final loading.
  • When you notice:
    • Inconsistent neck thickness
    • Poor bullet alignment
    • Accuracy issues at longer ranges
  • During case preparation for match-grade ammo.

👉 Uneven neck thickness can cause the bullet to release unevenly, leading to misalignment and reduced accuracy.

FAQs

Q: What does this pilot actually do?
A: It supports the inside of the case neck and keeps it centered so the cutter removes brass evenly, improving concentricity.

Q: Why is it smaller than bullet diameter?
A: The slight undersize (.002"–.0025") allows smooth case rotation while maintaining alignment.

Q: Can I use this with a Forster Case Trimmer neck turning attachment?
A: ❌ No. Hand-held pilots (HOT series) are not compatible with trimmer-mounted systems (OT series).

Q: Do I need a different pilot for each caliber?
A: ✅ Yes. Each caliber requires a specific pilot matched to bullet diameter.

Q: Is neck turning necessary for all reloaders?
A: No. It’s mainly beneficial for precision or competition shooting, not basic plinking ammo.
