Description

The Chemistry Of Powder And Explosives By Tenney Davis

The present edition combines the contents of Volume I, first published in May 1941, and Volume II, first published in March 1943, into a single volume. The book was written with chemists in mind. It was begun in order to provide a textbook for students in the author's powder and explosives course, which he taught for nearly twenty years (nearly every year since World War I) to fourth-year and graduate students of chemistry and chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The goal of the book is to describe the modes of behavior, both physical and chemical, of explosive substances as clearly and interestingly as possible and as extensively as deemed profitable, whether or not these modes find practical use. The historical material has been incorporated in places where it was deemed to help achieve this goal, but not elsewhere or for any other reason. It is a reality that learning the history of ideas, people, or things generates a sympathetic understanding of them in the same way that living with and working with them does. Excerpts from the Preface of the book.
