To counteract recoil and undesired muzzle rise, a part of the propellant gases are redirected. Ported barrels are those that have a built-in muzzle brake. Muzzle brakes were first created for artillery and were a frequent component on many anti-tank guns, notably, those mounted on tanks, to limit the area required to take up the recoil and kickback strokes.
