Contrary to popular belief, the 6,5x55 was designed by a joint Norwegian and Swedish military commission and adopted as the standard military cartridge in both countries in 1894. Since then, it has proven to be an extremely effective all-around cartridge. It is still the standard round for competition shooting and one of the most popular hunting cartridges in all three Scandinavian countries more than a century after its introduction. .
The reasons are self-evident. The moderate velocity and long bullet combine mild recoil and very deep penetration, which are critical factors for good shooting and a quick kill, and thus a successful hunt. This is well documented by the fact that tens of thousands of moose are killed with the 6,5x55 in Norway and Sweden every season.
