The bullet was created with competition shooters in mind. Hornady began with a bullet famed for its accuracy, the Hornady XTP, and transformed it into the ideal competition projectile. While the XTP uses folds and a cannelure to encourage growth and increase terminal performance, expansion is useless in competition. The folds and cannelure of the HAP (Hornady Action Pistol) bullet have been eliminated.

Hornady wrapped the HAP's pure lead core in a copper jacket to protect the nose and assure smooth feeding because jamming can cost a shooter the match. The HAP bullet's core, like the XTP's, is cold swaged from pure lead, providing it excellent consistency, balance, and stability in flight. This isn't ready-to-fire ammo.
