Description

This publication, developed from a translation of an original Russian guidebook, was written particularly for military personnel and collectors of modern military weapons.

The assault rifle is reported to have been produced in excess of 35 million units, making it the most frequently used military weapon in the world. Knowing your enemy's equipment inside and out can save your life.

The Soviet AK rifle has many features and is an offspring of the WWII German MKB-42, MP-43 & 44 'Machine Pistols' which were used in Russia after 1942. The Russians were stunned by such a powerful weapon and sought to adopt one of their own, but production was not feasible at the time. They only seem to have succeeded in developing the cartridge (Model 1943, 7.62 X a9mm), which is an intermediate cartridge with a fighting range of 300 meters.

M. T. Kalashnikov developed the AK-47 rifle, and -the initial prototype trials were of around 1000 units sent to a Soviet guard unit 40 miles outside of Moscow for the test. In 1946, the trials were finished, and production for the tank and airborne units began. It was seen as a supplement to the Russian SKS rifle at the time, rather than a replacement. The decision to replace the SKS rifle is thought to have been reached in the early 1950s.

The AK 47 assault rifle is well-made and reliable, with various unique characteristics such as a chrome-lined barrel, double-roped springs, and tool-free takedown. To be dependable, it should be kept as clean as possible, just like any other weapon.

There are no preparations for the bolt to remain open after the last shot, which could be fatal in battle. On a peaceful night, the movement of changing the safety from "safe" to "fire" creates enough noise to be heard from a long distance. On the normal AK, moving the safety to any position while wearing gloves is extremely difficult, and on the folding stock type, moving the safety to any position when the stock is folded is nearly impossible, with or without gloves.
